These are Georgia O’Keeffe hands, very dramatically posed, sometimes using objects as propos or just by themselves. I was thinking about taking a photograph like that. Well, when I was looking around the house for the appropriate size prop, I got engaged my husband into the project. Which was good, I thought about using my hands rather then his, anyway. But the final image turned into nothing like Stieglitz, with no drama, more techy, I would say. But an interesting image, nevertheless.

photography challenge- outdoors portrait at this time of the year. At this time, at the edge of winter and spring, it is really hard to find an interesting backdrop. Snow is almost gone, just a few patches here and there. No green grass yet. Everything is.. Iowa brown. Even the water on the dam was brown, although I could never tell why. And the sky was covered in clouds with freezing rain falling, to make matters worse.
So, yellowish brown it was. I am glad we found this patch of prairie grass to add something to the portrait. I used f/5.6 as my zoom lens didn’t go an wider, thinking at 200 mm I will get enough shallow depth of field. I would prefer to have the face softer, with focus on eyes only, but not with this lens. And because of crappy weather, to retain reasonable shutter speed at 1/250 sec, my ISO went all the way up to 800. It is surprising how much noise it can introduce in such camera as D300. It is not as well distinguishable here, but I still wish it was performing better.
Anyway, my husband got some new avatars for his online presence, and he still wants to pose :).

<a

It was a result of the e-mail exchange we had about photography, but it is beside the subject. The task was to set up a portrait studio under a white sheet with one light source on the outside. White sheet was working as light diffuser and created an isolated background for the portrait.

Trying different light types and positions could have been part of the assignment. Any home light fixture, flashlight flash or studio light would do the trick. I used my SB-600 strobe, but I guess even a living room lamp would do, especially that ISO can be increased. I actually started from shooting the flash from camera in Commander mode. I quickly noticed it was adding light to the scene (yeah, I know it shouldn’t, but it did, and was spoiling the image). I changed it to cable, and my lighting improved.

The other thing I experimented with was the lens. At first, I instinctively picked up my 30 mm f/1.4, on cropped sensor it works as a “normal” lens, 50 mm equivalent. It is very fast lens and offers sharper images. But it focuses from longer distance then my zoom, and overall was too wide for what I wanted to achieve. I put my old good 18-200 mm f/3.5 – 5.6 back on. The shutter speed was not important in this setting, I set it up once and forgot about it- it was just supposed to be short enough for handhold and no ambient light in the exposure.

I started from typical portrait settings, 70 mm and f/5.6, but I found it very uninspiring. I do not normally take portraits nor enjoy doing that. Human faces just not interest me, although I have to admit that my husband was a great model. I had to work hard to get creative. I shot bunch of front and side views, and decided that, after all, this is my assignment and I should shoot like me. I increased focal length all the way to 200 mm and tried to open the aperture, but couldn’t go any further. That’s all right, with 200 mm I got enough shallow depth of field. I just had to remember to keep always an eye (yeah, just one) in focus, and I went for close-up, detail and fragment.

I ended up with few keepers and Tomasz got a new avatar. This one on blog today is my favorite. I like the shallow depth of field around the face especially on the chin. I like how my husband tilted the head and how his blue shirt provided nice touch of color in the corner.

If you would like to participate in this challenge, post a link to your Flickr gallery or blog post in the comments section. It is great fun to work under the sheet :), so why not give it a try?

Sabrina Henry was protesting against forcing photography on people to document their cultures. Stuart Siphagil was talking about the importance of making connection with person he photographed. And with all of this, I was still wondering about this image I took a few weeks ago.
We live very close to Amish community. For Thanksgiving, we had house guests, and we wanted to show them some of our town. Driving around, we went to Kalona, too. If nothing else, it is really eyes opening to look at traditional life style of Amish right in the middle of our developed world. It prompted a heated and long discussion in a car. But we were also lucky to get there in the moment I think everybody in the community was coming back from town, so there were buggies driving down the road, one after the other.
It was just around sunset, and the light was just great. I took my camera and snapped few images. I had my lens at 200 mm, I did not wanted them to know or suspect that I am photographing them. The Amish do not like being photographed, I guess they don’t want to feel like objects on the exhibition. And yet, there are so many Amish images around the Net. And also I did not respect their right to privacy. I am even more concerned, if after taking those images, should I post them online. On one side, no privacy is violated here, no persons are distinguishable, but it is clearly agains their wishes. So, should we document their culture against their will? Should we share it with other people, to show them this great example of tolerance and respectful cohabitant? What are your thoughts?

<a

Well, how difficult can it be to achieve a desired effect in Lightroom nowadays, with local adjustments and stuff, right? Well, it apparently depends on how complicated the effect is. And instead of going for something simple, like maybe selective red or sepia like duotone, I wanted to achieve Rarindra Prakarsa effect. You would normally do it in Photoshop, with selection, 5 different layers and various blending modes.

But you can save yourself the trip to Photoshop, and probably some time required to create al those layers. I finally was able to. My major problem at first was that I went for the wrong tool. I wanted to fill the image with warm colors using Grad Filter, which just wasn’t doing it to the needed extend. After couple fo hours, I got the “Eureka” moment. The Split Tone tool does better job. I needed two colors, I used original Hue 46 for Highlights, but Hue 82 for Shadows was needed.

Before applying the preset (you can download it here), adjust the exposure on the image. After the preset has been applied, you need to add Adjustment Brush with -30 Saturation and Color Hue 214, Saturation 50% to the elements of the image you want to retain more natural color, for example people. Obviously, I couldn’t place it in the Preset :). Have fun using the preset and share links to your images in the Comments!

<a

From time to time, I will go and try and make subfolders and stuff, but with new version coming of old presets it probably makes more mess then help. Where do I take all the presets from? Lightroom Killer Tips is one of pages worth checking, and X-Equals has some free presets as well. But sometimes I see a link on somebody’s blog or on Twitter, and just add to my collection and forget where it was from.
Anyway, one of those no-idea day is today. I had this image of a single soldier, right in the middle of the frame, and wanted to do something interesting with it. Don’t get me wrong- I really think the composition works for this image, I like it overall. The soldier is in Napoleon-era outfit, an actor in the reconstruction of the Fort of Srebrna Gora battle from 1807. It is just asking for an aging treatment. I tried several different sepias, and it was just not doing it for me. So I went through my presets one by one, watching if something catches my eye. I “aged” the photo with Matt’s Old Fashioned Look, and through just for fun Matt’s Sin City on it, which added back reds to black-and white image. It is far more interesting now, and tells the story better. Don’t you think?

<a

It was a great time off everything, just snow and me. But on the lift and when we were packing the car, I grabbed several shots with my iPhone. This is my favorite. We were taking some snaps of sunset with silhouettes of group of people, and we were happy with the results, when this girl came in the picture.

<a
