href="http://bit.ly/zQCYh7">yesterday’s post, summarizing year 2011, I did a lot of cleaning on the blog, checking tags and categories and things. It made me jump to the least expected posts, sometimes quite old. I looked at this image from summer 2008, and I had some ideas how I would process it differently now. It probably is an evidence of not only how far I came in post-processing, but also how my esthetic changed. Although I still can appreciate contrast between light and shadow in my photographs, I prefer to see detail in the main subject.

To achieve that effect, I went to original image and discovered the Exposure was slightly brought down. I returned it to the original level and opened the image in Photoshop to try one-image tone-mapping. Did I generate a lot of digital noise doing that? Sure I did, but luckily I was also able to clean it up at the end. But I not only opened the shadow in which the church was hiding. I also exposed the warm setting sun rays on the side of the church, and let them contrast with blue light from shadows on the other side, the one facing the viewer. Unfortunately, the HDR treatment exposed a busy foreground, with many street signs and small side walk construction area, previously hiding in the dark. While still in Photoshop, I cleaned them and saved image back to Lightroom for finishing touches. At this point, all was left to do was to boost contrast, add a bit of vignette, and done.

I would love to her from you, if you find the Before & After series useful. My idea behind them is to show you, how image can be improved with your increasing post-processing skills. I am not giving you the ready recipes, rather I am showing some concepts to take back to your images taken years ago, at which you just look and wonder – “how could I let it be like this?”. But if you feel like more detailed technique explanations would be in order, let me know!

<a

Instead, is raining cats and dogs. Days like that are not typical for Iowa, at least they were not last almost 6 years I lived here. What they remind of, though, is Vancouver and NYC, where it seems to be raining most of the time. As it was last summer we were in NYC. I took one day just to wonder around Midtown, on my way to United Nations form the hotel we stayed. I took the photograph of those buildings because of their interesting shape- the triangles in the see of rectangles. Bu turning it black and white, I was able to focus attention on those shapes and glass of which everything seems to be made in the image. The reflections in all surfaces create texture in the image, adding some interest.

<a

Outside. I do not care what anybody does in their homes, but outside those lights are only one thing- <a

I was wondering for a while how to photograph the holiday decorations to retain some of the atmosphere but not overload the frame (and a sensor) with too many colors and brightness. And driving from holiday shopping one evening last week I got an idea.

In this part of the country, almost all new developments are build around a small artificial pond. It always fascinate me, but this time it actually came in handy. The lights create abstract patterns of color, and freezing water on late winter night changes the texture through the image. My favorite is below.

Happy Holidays, everybody!

<a

I was using Zoomify to prepare and present panoramas on blog previously, but with Lion update, the Mac client stopped working. I was looking for a similar tool, without much luck. Until this weekend, when I asked my husband for help. When he was done Googling, the only solution promising was PanoJS project, open source code which required some work to build plug-in for WordPress. On Sunday evening, programming magic was done, and I can display again panoramic images, where you can look at many details of the image and the view by zooming in and scrolling. Have fun!
<p

The winter have not started yet, but I do have cabin fever already. I just had to get out of the house and take some photos. So I went for a walk on probably the coldest day of the season so far. I couldn’t find anything to focus on. I took set of different exposures for HDR of this view, just to keep myself busy. And then I discovered my photographic subject for a day. This is the reason I even put it out on blog- to set the scene. Come back tomorrow, and you will see what I found to photograph and how much fun it was. From his description – 61F and rain, doesn’t look there is much difference between June and December in The City. Thus the image of Empire State Building in fog is quite appropriate at this time of the year as well.
That particular day, discouraged by the renovations and exhibit changes and overall tourist crowds, I decided just take a walk around Midtown. First I was unhappy with the weather, it was light rain and foggy, but then I decided to portray the City the way it was. This image of Empire State Building is one of my favorite. It would be almost grey and boring monotone, if there wasn’t for the strange pink cast on the windows in the lower floors. I added some saturation to it, to highlight it, as this is what made me take this picture.

<a

This image caught my attention due to crispiness of details, thanks to moderately narrow aperture. When I was working on it, I discovered more about the image. It was shot in late afternoon, with the sun setting behing the downtown high-raisers. It causes some areas of the image take a different, warmer tones from the setting sun, while the sky in the right top is still midday blue. The dividing line is cutting the frame diagonally, making it less static and more interesting. The clouds and downtown area on one side, and the sky and bushes on the other. Those colors are also reflected in the Mississippi waters. The contrast of those worm and cool tones add another layer of interest.

<a

What he means by that is working the subject. Explore different angles, and points of view, and try horizontal or vertical. Change the lens for different effect. go back at different time of the day for different light, different season. This this requires time. At the same time, it gives you the chance to get the best photograph there is, showing exactly what drew you to the scene.

I read about it for the first time in the <a
href="https://www.e-junkie.com/ecom/gb.php?ii=992566&c=ib&aff=119796&cl=88199" title=""Inspired Eye III"" target="_blank">“Inspired eye III” by David DuChemin, where it was even illustrated with a spread of those early tries leading ultimately to the finished image, matching photographer’s intent. This idea is also in <a
href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0321750446/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=korwelphotog-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=0321750446" title=""Photographically speaking"" target="_blank">David DuChemin’s newest book, “Photographically speaking”.

Most of my picture taking is snapping. I look around for scenes drawing my attention- by shape, color, texture. Mostly color, color contrast is my favorite subject. And then I just record what I see. Hardly ever would I spend more time on it, sketching. But it happend a few times, and I liked the results.

In a sense, my summer spent photographing wild flowers I planted in front of my house this year was working the subject. But the truth is, the changes in my flower bed were so quick, that every evening I was coming to something different. Another example where I really took time with the subject was previous year, where I had probably close to an hour, waiting for my ride, to photograph this modern fountain in the downtown Rybnik. Water fascinates me, and the shape of the fountain was just perfect for the abstract. I came back with over 130 images. I think I showed some of my favorites from the day (check posts here and here), but there are many more. But here is few more- from overview to the abstracts. There were two colors dominating the images, so I decided to use only those two colors and created a duotone (for Lightroom suers, Highlights settings are 171,7 and for Shadows 41,36). In the town of Traer, there is a USA Today). Within over 16,000 of shakers pairs, it is really hard to find small glass bottle with metal cap with wholes, or whatever shaker you put on your table when you sit to dinner. But there is a very interesting collection of animals, cartoon characters, food and vegetable shaped shakers, as well as holiday themed shakers, with Christmas and Santa Claus motives leading there. But what I found most interesting was the collection called by the stuff “go-withs”- sometimes matching and often very atypical pairs of collectible shakers. Take a look at some examples in the gallery below.
<a
