“Winter in the Canadian Rockies” by Darwin Wiggett – e-book review

Darwin Wiggett, if you don’t know him yet, has his hands in lots of things photographic. He runs a very popular photography blog, where he shares as much of his great images, as he promotes the work of other photographers through “Inspirations” or “Photographer of the month” series as well as contests. He leads photo tours every season in the Canadian Rockies, which he seems to have explored pretty well. He is also part of the Visual Wilderness community, offering workshops, seminars and e-books for photographers.

This time, he shares his experience in photographing the wintery landscape of Canadian Rockies through “Craft and Vision”. This e-book, titled “Winter in the Canadian Rockies” is another in the “The Print and the Process” series. As with other e-books in this series, you will find here a large collection of great images, if my count is correct, there is 51 of them. You will not regret time spent exploring them. Some are traditional landscapes, but there are some more intimate macro and abstract work, and few wildlife, including my favorite – pine marten on a snow bank. A lot are colorful, there are few natural duotones, but there are also some great black and white conversions. And there is a lot of tips on why and how to do the black and white conversion for winter photos. If you live in Northern Hemisphere and struggle with creative ideas looking at currently snow covered land, this collection can certainly serves as inspiration and provide ideas. And it comes out in the right time.

The Process part of the book is full of great advice, not only for photographers. There are tips on what to wear, how to protect ourselves from elements and pack for unexpected. There are of course tips on how to use the best of your gear in below-freezing tenperatures. There is a great section on additional ideas on winter subject matters and what to pay attention to, and why black and white works so well for winter landscape. At the end, each of previously showcased images is described in detail to how and why it was taken. This section is by itself filled with great photographic tips, on usage of filters, tilt-shift lenses and many more. This e-book is a great inspiration and field guide to photograph Canadian Rockies or any other place in adverse conditions of winter.

Here is how “Craft & Vision” introduces the newest release:

Darwin captures the spirit of Canada’s most striking mountain range in this monograph of breath-taking landscapes. Photographers of all levels, and geographic persuasion, will find inspiration and insight in this beautiful body of work, and the accompanying discussions, that spans nearly 3 decades.
