Puddle

Today’s post is a personal take on Eli Reinholdtsen portfolio of reflections. I did an extensive review of her e-book yesterday. Until last weekend, I don’t think I appreciated entirely that taking an interesting urban reflection can be such a challenge. But I chose it as one of my shooting ideas for Saturday’s Worldwide Photowalk. It was organized downtown Rybnik, and I thought I will have a lot of opportunities. But when I was walking down the promenade, observing people and situations happening in front of many window displays, nothing struck me as a photograph worthy. The only thing which saved the project was presence of puddles after the rain. It is far easier to find an interesting reflection in the puddle.
What I like about the image is its almost monochrome feel of the water and the street cobble stones, contrasting with bright yellow color of the building in the reflection. And the three windows, perfectly asymmetrical.

On weekend, we went to buy a train ticket for my mom, as she was traveling in the evening, when the register is already closed. The railroad and train gave us a few ideas for photographs, and the camera went with us for the walk. My first idea was static tracks and blurred moving train, but it turns out the opposite- panning of the train, made for a more interesting photograph.

Miniature town

There is another panorama coming up on Monday. Do I make an impression that I am addicted to them? I probably am, but at the same time, I am visiting so many places which just ask for it. There is far more hills and mountains in Southern part of Poland then in Iowa, for sure. High positioned spots which ask for some more fun then just regular image. I took this close-up after the panorama of Bielawa with tilt-shift maker in mind. As simple as the processing on this site is, I actually put some extra effort into achieving the effect I was after. I really wanted the whole apartment block to be in sharp focus- otherwise, it was fairly distracting.

Old wall

This old wall, or entrance, is a part of the same palace I showed on Monday. After finishing off photographing the whole ruin, I went off to focus on details, on windows framing the tress growing from the inside of the palace and tress coming through doors.

Wlodowice palace

I took this image of the 17th century palace ruin yesterday in small town of Wlodowice in South-Central Poland. The composite image (15 photos went into making) was 43 inches wide and 28 inches tall. Quite a size for my small MacBook. It made the file almost impossible to refine in LR2! I cut it down a bit. But you can still see a lot of detail in the photo when you scroll around it.

Visitor Center

I was hoping for some Easter food photo for today’s blog, but my “studio” is on the move. Or, to be exact, was supposed to be moved, just laziness was stronger. In effect, no photos were shot, and most of stuff was already eaten or the Easter breakfast. :(
But the Visitor Center image I had scheduled for next Sunday seems to be very appropriate for today in a Christian way. We took this image in during our stay in Salt Lake City last month. This visitor center on Temple Square was our last stop that busy evening. We were trying to make HDR, but the average exposure work very well, too. I ended up compiling an HDR afte rall, just processing it in a very natural way, to reflect how we saw scene.

Sunset over SLC

I had exactly one evening to catch some photographs on my last stay in Salt Lake City a couple of weeks ago. The weather was not exactly perfect (it was so cold and windy!), but at least was not soaking rain like an evening before that. We were even able to catch some sunset on top of LDS Conference Center.

Temple Square

Last week, I was at Salt Lake City for a scientific meeting. As it is hectic time at work and I was planning a short vacation in Southern Utah afterwords, I almost did not have any time to hit town with camera. Busy days listening to presentations, busy night networking. I ended up with two hour space between session on which I presented and dinner, took husband and camera to look for photo opportunities at Temple Square. I certainly was not disappointed.

The Cube

The steel cube is called Alamo, and you can find it in Astor Place in New York. I don’t think it is a widely photographed New York landmark, and the difficulty in finding an angle probably contributes ;) . I actually found it only because I had too much time on my hands and wanted to discover just this part of town and on foot. I like the contrast between the simple shape of the cube and the complicated detail in the building behind it, as well the contrast of their colors.

The School of Law

I took this image with HDR in mind when I was walking around Greenwich Village in New York in December. I was exploring NYU campus, as my husband suggested few nice photographic opportunities. I found this shaded walkway in front of School of Law and stopped by to photograph. I love the detail the HDR provides for architectural photography. Just look at the texture of the ceiling.
