“Craft & Vision” – a FREE e-book

In a spirit of Holidays, there is a great present coming from Craft & Vision today, for both avid fans of the company and people who are interested in learning more about their offer. Titled simply “Craft & Vision”, the e-book is a team work of almost all the authors who have (or will in near future) written an e-book for this unique company.

In a series of 11 short essays, each of them shares their tips on a single subject related to the photographic process. It is an interesting mixture of technical, compositional and finishing steps, as well some more general thoughts. In moments, it feels like some of the authors exchanged subjects with each other, or complement somebody else’s previously released e-book. And yet, there is no repetition, just added unique perspective.

The one complaint I would have about the e-book is lack of logical organization of the chapters. It is not by subject matter not is it by author, alphabetically. The Table of Contents is helpful, but it includes only the titles, not the authors name.

What’s in the e-book?

Piet Van Den Eynde– has two chapters, one on creative use of shutter speed and the other about creating different portraits by changing the lens.

David duChemin – also two chapters, on perfecting digital exposure and making more meaningful portraits. Great writing on using Histogram to help you determine the exposure in the first one!

Martin Bailey – a surprise name, as his first e-book at Craft & Vision is coming in January. He shares some basic tips on printing images.

Michael Fry – talks about intensional use of elements of design to guide the viewer through a photograph.

Alexandre Buisse – this is my favorite essay in whole collection. It talks about stages of photographer’s life, with commenting on pitfalls of each.

Andrew S. Gibson – explains the value of pursuing personal projects and working with other photographers.

Nicole S. Young – gives some tips on improving the composition.

Eli Reinholdtsen – focuses on importance of capturing just the right moment

Stuart Sipahigil – teaches how to become keen observer of just life around you as a way to create better photographs.
