Sunset grass on Coralville Lake

I took this image a couple weekend ago and finally got to post it on the blog. It is one of those close to home images that, with not so exciting subject with the help of just right light, the magic can be created. I remember trying the composition for this image, going lower and lower with the camera on the tripod, until I ended up laying down on the snow on the small dam between two lakes. But it was well worth it.

It is an HDR, combination of five shots, which allowed me to retain the detail in the sun lit sky, hills and the beautifully glowing grass. I am getting partial to warm sunset light, don’t like images taken any other time of the day anymore ;).

Lovely, Iza. I had to check where the Coralville Lake was located. Quite a body of water! What time of the day was the HDR taken? I find the bokeh, right to the grasses so unusual. Do you always take five shots for your HDRs? I usually do seven… do you immediately see the pros and cons to either of the options?

Gosia, I typically take 5 exposures and use the two extreme and the middle, almost never I use all five. They are shot a step apart (Nikon), so I use -2, 0 and +2. I found it to be sufficient in most situations. But there are situations I need to shoot more. You can actually say by looking at the histogram. Your lightest, +2 should not have deep dark shadows in the areas you want detail (it dosen’t mean you have to have all the detail in every part of the photograph). But most importantly, your darkest, -2, should not have overexposed areas, unless it is the sun. If you have one of those problems, you might want to shoot 7 or even 9 exposures.
