I have to remind myself the same thing on occasion. :)

I also have been making a concerted effort to comment on other blogs. Not so much so I’ll get return traffic but to just show support for others following their passion.

It helped for me to finally get Google Reader organized so I can see when new posts are made to each of the blogs I follow.

I used to really love the tilt-shift look, but now I see it used all the time, for portraits and wedding photography, and often it’s just distracting.

I love my Lensbaby, however. I think it looks much nicer than a regular tilt-shift lens. (Plus, it’s way cheaper!)

The miniature effect from tilt-shift lens or software works better when there are subjects at different distances in the photo.

Photos with a lot of sky or water are difficult to work with in this case because there is not a lot of detail in those areas to gives a changed focus effect.

I don’t think Lensbabies compare exactly to real tilt-shift lenses, because the out of focus area in the lensbaby is always a radial blur, and it’s tricky to get the miniature effect this way.

I love the soft colors in this photo, and that streak of light under the trees is beautiful. I think it’s tough to find your own style as a photographer, but at least you have a direction you want to go in, and this image is a great example.

And I feel you on the noise issue. I do my best never to go above 400, although 800 is passable on my camera, just because any post processing really brings out the noise at those speeds.

The water has such a cool blue tint! I notice there’s no shutter speed posted, but you must have had a fairly long speed to get such silky water.

Actually, the blue tint is a vibrance slider up in Lightroom, I usually push it up a bit, but when I saw what happened, I went even more (and then decreased saturation on green color :)). Anyway, the photo is an HDR of 4 images, the longest shutter was 30 sec.

The lane closer to me was oncoming traffic, the further one was shot from behind. I assume the red is so muted because of the fact that it was an Interstate so cars and trucks were driving 70mph.

As someone who participated in that same Photo Walk (headed up a local Photo Walk in my town) and who happens to be on the very same email list as you, I know where you’re coming from. However, because I also happen to work in the very same building as Scott Kelby, I have a little behind-the-scenes information which might help you see why my reaction is different from yours. — Don’t get me wrong, I’m frustrated enough that I might use your term “simply disgusted” but for a different reason.

The truth is, there’s no way that the sponsorships could cover all the expenses involved with putting on this “free” 32,000 person event, BUT NO ONE sold our list to spammers, it’s just that one bad apple abused the email structure. Participants are rightfully upset at the unreasonable amount of email, and legitimate sponsors are upset because their messages are getting watered down. Even though we were caught off guard this year, we’ve put measures in place to see that this doesn’t happen again next time.

If you haven’t already, you should check out Google analytics, it counts all the visits to your site. In addition, I subscribe to my own blog in Google Reader, and by clicking on the Details button I can see how many people are subscribing to my blog at any given time.

There are some RRS clients or programs, where you put the RSS feed address, and whenever the new post comes, it is downloaded just like an e-mail. I am using same software as for my e-mail (Thunderbird). Your blog has it, I think it comes by default, so I added it to my list of blogs right when you started. I don’t need to monitor you blog and I still know when you write something new. Like yesterday ;).

I mostly agree. I like going to camera stores and even just browse, almost as much as I enjoy visiting bookstores. But the availability is often a problem. If I go and look for particular item, especially if I need it right away (or just want it right away, as a particular book last weekend), there is a high chance it is not in stock :(.

Izabela,

I appreciate the fact that you took the time to sit down and express your concerns about Woopra. Issues relating to privacy and data security should always be debated publicly to keep everyone honest. And, although I’m the CEO of Woopra I am also a HUGE advocate of Internet privacy. As evidence I would point you to a post I wrote regarding a project I support called the Freenet Project:

Let me just touch on a few key points in response to your concerns:

– First, and most importantly, by using Google Analytics you already have one of the World’s largest mega-corporations collecting much, much, much more data about you and your Website visitors. But if you ask me, what is far worse is that you have no idea what information they are collecting, and they will never give you access to it. But Google isn’t the only one.

– MANY companies track every single thing you do on their site. Will you stop using Amazon.com? They know everything that Woopra does, plus much more. And so do almost all of the large sites. The only difference is that Woopra is bringing this capability to small websites who couldn’t otherwise do it themselves.

– When woopra tracks users individually it’s important to understand that you ONLY get tracked by name if you give your name to that individual Website. So, for example, if you come and leave a comment on OneMansBlog.com and you use your name, that is how you get tagged. Woopra NEVER shares (or even tracks) your details across domains. So, there should be no concern that people are watching you without your knowledge.

– At the end of the day, if you visit a site that had Woopra running on it, and you left a comment and got tagged, all you have to do is clear your browser’s cookies and you are no longer tracked.

Now, let’s look at it from another perspective. I understand that you have a strong desire not to be tracked personally. But I don’t! I actually want you to know that I stopped by your blog. And if I come back a few times I want you to know that as well. Becuase if I like you enough to repeatedly visit then maybe you might take a little more personal interest in having me there. Perhaps you’ll respond to my comments more often, and perhaps we will build a bit of a relationship.

I can tell you that of the thousands of regular readers I have on my site, not one person has ever complained or decided not to come back, and they all know I’ve got Woopra running.

So, my final advice would be, if you are personally uncomfortable with allowing your data to be collected – by all means take action. Don’t leave your real name in comments, and clear your cookies occasionally. But I would also recommend that you not project that same outlook on your site’s readers because I promise you from YEARS of experience and millions and millions of visitors… they don’t mind.

Thanks a lot for your comment on my post. I respect your views. As a blogger, I understand the need of Woopras and Google Analytics and whatever will come next. But as a user, I want other users to be aware of what is happening beneath the surface of blogs and web pages they visit. I want them to make informed decision. There is a difference between “don’t mind” and “don’t realize it was even possible”. People who are not actively blogging and reading technical blogs do not know about those things. I decided to share my views on this blog, hoping to educate and maybe spark a discussion in broader community.

I totally agree with Iza. I wouldn’t like to be tracked by any anyone, either. I don’t mind the data about me collected by Google Analytics, but Woopra takes more. More I want it know about me. Do I have to remember all the time someone is following me, watching what I am reading, what I am eating, what I am listening to? I don’t want to be observed all the time or being busy of finding ways to outsmart the “Big Eye”. I wish I could have a choice.

I understand your points and can also understand John’s response. As we have seen with the recent Facebook privacy settings changes and the issues ad targeting services like Phorm have generated, there is a lot of concern from the public about this level of tracking. It is a fine line companies will need to tread, but there are potentially benefits as well.

Something to educate yourself on without a doubt.

I don’t entirely agree with you, as being able to edit your images and picking one out of 634 (that is what I brought from our photowalk :) ) is a skill by itself. And the one I don’t have/don’t like doing too much.

Thanks, Sabrina, the simplicity and lightness of your blog was one of the tipping points to sit down and finally do it! However, the re-design came in the last moment before really busy holiday season, so I am afraid it will be followed by quieter time on posting. I hope I will be able somehow not to loose all of my favorite followers, including you, until Christmas, when I expect to be able to get back to more thoughtful posting. But I really feel invigorated by the new look, and ready for new challenges!

Hi! Saw the link to my article and wanted to stop by. Nicely done, and thank you for searching out my image! If it helps at all, I had the lens on the TT positioned at about the same angle as the knife, and tried to position the camera angled (rolled forward) slightly down toward the cutting board while it was parallel to the front edge of the cutting board. I’ve found that working with these lensbaby lenses, I have to think in 3 dimensions which provides a nice challenge.

Our Ethiopia tour guide told us one simple rule, which I quite liked (and obeyed): If you want to photograph landscape (with or without people), that’s fine, if you want to do a close-up or a portrait, ask (and, if it was part of the negotiated deal, pay), if unsure, it’s better to politely ask than to piss off somebody, you’re a guest in this country.
Well, not always applicable, but not too bad as a rule of thumb.

Howdy, the Amish photo question is one that often comes up. You’ll get varied opinions from Amish. Amish typically don’t enjoy being photographed, but generally unposed photos are more acceptable than posed ones, which most Amish will not agree to (though, even there you may occasionally be surprised).

Unposed photos mean that Amish are not complicit in the photo-taking, while Amish have traditionally viewed posing as indicating pride. I wrote an article on this that may be of interest: http://amishamerica.com/what-do-amish-think-about-photography/

I come a little. Will not this be a thing called “chem trail” not a contrail?
　Such a trail is seen in the evidence every day, and it is in every day of the light blue sky, and there is not already the blue sky to the utmost whether the sky is the white sky.
　I search an image, an animation in chem trail and am happy if reference can have “chem trail / . you understand the scatter of each place.
　In the situation that major mass communication cannot but report in U.S.A., Germany in Japan soon.
　It is a powder that the sky is whitish even if I have a look at a photograph-like feeling. Breath tends to scatter it for the night and day; will do; become it.
　Because Japan has only area of the State of American California degree, the surroundings scatter is possible with a jumbo jet. Therefore it is witnessed in the place considered to be the country.
In addition, I keep scattering it because it does not come out on a cloudy day. The people to notice decrease in the time of the rainy season (the pivot is to scatter it every day).
The scatter spreads by night, and it is often that the sky is white from the beginning in the morning recently.

I think maybe you’re overthinking it. Art by definition is subjective: what pleases me doesn’t necessarily please you. Personally I shoot to my own definition of art, and let others decide if it works for them or not.

I certainly don’t love all celebrated photographers, but some I just adore. Find the principles that speak the most to you, and use those. The rest, ignore.

It’s all not that simple, really, but the first mistake you can make is setting your own preferences or taste with something you spot on the wall in the random gallery or on some magazine. Critical example – World Press Photo images. Another comparison – should you not judge the art of music by turning on the radio and being suddenly exposed to some “tune” performed by Lady Gaga or other Rihanna.

Devlin, I don’t necessarily agree with you. I think galleries (or radio in your example) show certain trends. You might not need to follow them, but it is probably smart to be aware of them. I am for example sick of seeing landscape images with stones setting up the foreground before showing a lake or mountain or something on middle ground. It makes me feel that it was too calculated and intentional. But it is a trend, and I noticed it, even I don’t shoot this way. At the same time, I don’t think I would recognize Lady Gaga song, although I probably heard many of them- to that extend I am not interested in music :).

Jessica, as much as I agree with you and I would go and shoot what I please, as often I don’t particularly like what I see on the screen. These are the moments I feel I need something more than reading another book or blog post about rule of thirds. And I will go and look at some master’s work, and instead of finding what I like about them, I start seeing flows. And that leads me to think and overthink :). But I think there are some universal rules of arts and temporary trends, which I want to understand.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting on the image! I did not shoot HDR, because I have seen no reason to do it. I wanted almost blown-out, pure white snow as a plain background, and the plants surrounded by it. It means there wasn’t enough dynamic range to need HDR. And as I said, with the third plant, I justs didn’t like the composition, especially that the three plants are not in the same distance form each other.

Interesting post. I love how each photo changes with the crop. For the longest time, I did not tend to crop my images, other than 1:1 – square. (Who doesn’t love square?) But as I saw examples of others doing it, and completely changing their photos (usually for the better) I began to explore it more often. I still probably don’t do it as much as I should, but your post is inspiring me to try!

Truncated feeds end up in trash here too. Even worse are those that publish only excerpt, pure commercial text with no content. I have no opinion about popups or tweetememewhatever – somehow I don’t see popups on blogs nor do I tweet. But I have one more RSS peeve – feeds that continuously re-feed you with articles that have been even remotely touched (like the author ment back and changed the typo). I had a feed once that was feeding me with last 10 posts about 10 times a day (blogger apparently had too much time to spend) – 100 entries about absolutely nothing. Urgh…

A good review – thank you. I was wondering, however, how applicable the workflow and instructions are for someone like myself who mainly uses Apple Aperture (and sometimes Adobe Bridge/ACR) rather than Lightroom? I’m guessing that with a bit of common sense it will be reasonably easy to apply the different techniques to different software. If you could comment on this, it would be appreciated.

It is a really good question. I have never used Aperture, so I do not know if there are any local adjustment options for example in there. I took a lot of value from the part of the e-book talking about using those to finish off the image. But I do think you would still be able to use many of other workflow ideas, like using white balance, color channel mixer and all plug-ins and finishing touches. I think it might be a good investment. Alternatively, take a look at Andrew Gibson’s e-book trilogy which is more Photoshop oriented.

I agree the camera box is a bit small, however I’d like to share how I use the Passport Sling. First I have used bags, backpacks, and belts from many companies and all have limitations depending on what and where you are working. I pack the bag this way: I put my backup camera(D5000) with a variety of lenses hood on or reversed in the box, in the small box compartment I store a 50mm prime, lens cloth/pen etc. In the rest of the bag I unzip the storage area and put my Sigma 10-20mm in it’s own padded bag, my SB900 Flash also in it’s pouch, both on their sides, on top of that I can fit a gripped D90 with a variety of lenses, in 1 of the 2 pouches inside the bag I carry a tripod mount plate as well as a speedlight base attached to a tripod plate(I use it on my monopod for off camera flash) in the other I carry my phone. I have a small notebook&pen in the outer slash pocket,water bottle in it’s spot, nothing in the one that rides against my hip. When I get to the location I remove the D90 and it goes around my neck, the flash goes on the camera or I remove the lens in the smaller box compartment and put it there for quick access, lens goes in outer bag. I carry the bag unzipped BOX forward so I have easy access to the other camera usually with the 10-20 or 17-50mm attached. I can remove and replace it without looking and it stays safely inside the box. If I have to move quickly or run I simply zip it up. Hope this helps as some people have complained about the limited space, if used wisely this bag is very useful but only if you are using medium size cameras. A larger “Pro” model would replace every bag I own! Are you listening Lowe Pro??

Hi Iza, what an awesome trip it must have been. I’ve seen your later images as well and I really like the Badlands HDR (by the way, how many exposures do you usually take?). Your two hours of sleep totally amaze me, the thought alone makes me cranky. I’ve done it the other way – the sunrise, a decent nap to break the day, and eventually the sunset – but to endure what you’ve gone through???? I typically take 5 exposures for HDR- that’s because my Nikon ca do only 1 stop spaced images. I use for the HDR the -2, 0 and +2 exposures. We did the sunset and sunrise just as you describe it, sunrise, nap, sunset, good night sleep. The two hours I was referring to were the “nap hours” :). And it was worth it ,but I am sure not something I would like doing every day when on vacation!

It is a bit heavy to keep up for hours, but other then that- it was a perfect lens for the airshow. Just enugh zoom for close-up and just enough on the other end, when action got too close to me. I was very happy with it. I tried 50-500mm before (from Sigma) and I wasn’t even trying to handhold it. This was a better choice.

I think the awarded image will be the merry-go-round (5th image, first in the second raw). It was entered into the category “World in motion”, and its does a good job showing the carousel moving with its surroundings in sharp focus. Also, the theme- local small town fest somewhere in Iowa- fits well into what State Fair is looking for. In less then 24h, I will know if I was right! Stay tuned.

Well my thoughts are :

– this isn’t the prettiest flower in the world. The central part look like it burned. Naturally we can blame only that guy floating above us :)

– the background is OK (maybe the color is a bit too intense), and i would never guess it a tree!

Thanks for commenting, Marlene. The flower is actually not burned at all, at least according to histogram, safely off the right side. As far as flower goes- I agree, that probably why we eat peppers and not cut their flowers ant put in the vase ;).

I use my primes most of the time – looking in Lightroom it seems like the 50mm is on the camera most. I almost can’t abide zooms now, I’m getting pretty picky.

Fair enough. I do have some prime lenses- 30 mm, 85 mm macro, fisheye, and Lensbaby- and I treat them all as special application lenses. I still rely on 18-200 mm zoom for trips- where I might need 18 mm for those wide-angle establishing shots and 200 mm to get some wildlife or aiplanes, depending on destination. I don’t think I would be happy with outcome otherwise, you not always can zoom with feet. But I think I need to take more close to home photowalks with prime…

Look at you data in a little different scope – treat focal lengths as groups, let’s say 18-50, 50-100, 100-150 and above and you’ll quickly see that you spend much more on the lower end of spectrum than up in the 200s. It’s a matter how your lens is reporting focal length that skews your results, slight unnoticeable adjustments in 18-50 will produce another data point while in 150-200 range you have only two.

A very interesting exercise. A quick scan of my Lightroom library also brings about a surprising result. Most of my outdoor shots are at 75-105 range, longer focal lengths if I deliberately use the photo lens. The studio shots are mostly at 50-75, and yet, the prime 50mm I used a while back seemed so labourious that I gave it up. I have to follow in your steps and use the wide angle for those “light fixture” shots – never thought about it. Isn’t it true though? One uses the most what one is most comfortable with. By the way, I enjoyed your plot very much, and I’m not a scientist. Hugs. Gosia

It is something with how the iPad WordPress app processes the images that my exif plug-in is not able to read the information. It happens always when I post during the trip :(. For this particular image, the settings were: 135 mm focal length, ISO 1250, exposure 1/200 @ f/5.6.

You should not accept flying as a risk, but you should accept risks of flying. Aviation is probably one of very few activities around that openly talk about all the risks involved. Does it make it less safe? I doubt, I’d say it makes it safer. All life activities have some risks associated with them, especially when you are pushing limits (air races, car races, boat races, bicycle races, every one of them have had tragic accidents).

Heck, just this night 5 people got shot to death on the streets of Chicago. I bet nobody prepared them for those risks. Drunk drivers? Do we openly talk about how great risk is involved in driving car on the public roads? No, people tend to forget about it unless tragedy hits very close to home. Aviation is a relatively small world and every tragedy is close to home.

Accept that risk and do whatever you can to mitigate it.

I agree with that statement in full. Although, soft light, like during a misty morning full of fog can be very dramatic in mono. I think, as with anything in photography, it depends on your subject and how you feel best to present it.

IMO trees and clouds are the hardest things to get right in HDR and have a tendency to look.. off. This is a really cool city scape with nice foreground. The trees look good too. The clouds on the top part look a bit dark and are mildly distracting, but that’s nature I think, you do what you can :)

I think what HDR does is to put what I would call “streaks of shadow” on some surfaces, otherwise rendered well lit. I see it on building or airplanes on many of my HDR images. And I think it might be the same with clouds, especially those dark ones, as on the right top corner. Maybe we look at it and subconsciously (or even consciously) notice shadows where it should not be. In this case, I think the clouds add to the atmosphere to the image, with the clearing sky up and puffy, colorful from the sunset clouds at the bottom.

I do websites. I agree with you, the Iowa Aviation Photography contest is a cheap way for them to build a library of photos to promote their agenda. With that in mind, there is SOME benefit. If you are a serious photographer and want to ad credibility to your name for a resume or portfolio, then it is good to enter a couple of photos in your ‘area of expertise’ to get a first place award. I figure it works both ways, you get to help promote aviation and you get a little bit of recognition for your efforts. It is pretty much the same with the fair, it is a good marketing / PR tool. Yes indeed, I like my latest camera for overcoming these little things…..the lumix G2 allows me to override settings by pressing the iA button. Yes its intelligent auto but it will jump you in and out of anything else and seems to be just thing for me and my type of pictures.

First off – whaat ? had no idea Trey’s image hangs in Smithsonian.

Second. I was pondering on similar thoughts couple of months ago and i wish i had the answers for you.
Truth is, the more i was thinking about it the more i was convinced that those “master” labels are only that – labels – at least for me. It’s not saying that one should discard masters or have no idea of photography’s past. In fact i deeply believe photographer, as any other artist, need to recognize or be at least fluent in its field when it comes to past works or let’s call it artistic legacy if you will.

On the same note i think it there’s no harm in aknowledging that you don’t particularly care about one’s work – even if he or she is so called master. There’s only one condition – it has to be conscious choice, one that has been made after deeper look at one’s work . Only then i think we can say without being ignorant: “this guys work doesn’t do it for me”.

As to who decides and distribute “master labels” – i don’t know. It probably isn’t event who but what. May be this whole notion of artistic acceptance throughout time – global, cross-cultural appreciation of one’s work.

I know one thing – it doesn’t really matter to me. One should be able to appreciate art wihout retracting to titles, labels etc etc. This is exactly my approach.

For example Trey Ratcliff’s image may really hang in Smithsonian. Based on that some would call him a master, master of HDR or whatever. But for me, (event though Trey is a really cool guy and i’m very much familiar with Trey’s work) his work just isn’t to my taste.

Another one is Cartier-Bresson – master indeed – everyone will tell me that and that i should probably hail before his work. And i do sometimes! He really is a master to me but if i’m being frank i much rather like the work of Robert Doisneau or Erwitt. Both every little bit as good as Bresson in the notion of decisive moment, but i appreciate Doisneau more because of his uncanny ability to capture poetry side of ordinary moments, his work is more romantic and nostalgic, dreamy even and for that i love it. Erwitt on the other hand takes humor and irony into almost another level – it’s whole other interpretation of life. Everytime i see his work i remember that life isn’t really that serious.

I can also easily point people on 500px who’s work is amazing and they very much strike a chord in my artistic taste.
Nobody today would call them masters probably, maybe they just are skilled, as you said but, ultimately, does it really matter ?

Thanks for writing, Radek! Your thoughts make me think about it all ones more. I guess I have two competing takes on the subject. One is if I really need to know the old masters in order to create unique art and not repeating what they have already done- take the inspiration and move things forward. And I know people on both sides- people who look at as many photographers work as possible and those who refuse to look at any. Secondly, I would like to look at other people work which was already screened by somebody more experienced then I am, thinking that looking at many mediocre images (like many on Flickr for example) will ultimately not help me develop. Or will it?

I guess it’s like Mr duChemin is often saying: “art is derivative”. It’s true – the odds of making something very unique are low. Best one can do, i think, is to create art in sync with one’s true self. As you said – take all the inspiration you can get and move on. For example when i’m looking at someone’s work i do two things: first i would inhale all the beauty that is there, beauty that attracted me in the first place but then i try to think what is EXACTLY that allured me to the image. What is that i like about it, what works for me in the picture in terms of composition and the like and what’s not. It’s a little analysis but it’s on more universal level. Through that i can gain more critical eye on my own work. I try to do all that in a balanced way. If i would do that too often i would probably end up subconsciously searching for similar things that works and that i and others like (i did that even this year and promised myself that no more!). I think that looking around (or back) all the time instead of creating on your own is rather futile. We should look for inspiration, without our ego getting in a way and ultimately being hurt (because we tend to compare our efforts anyway). This often leads to abandoning our art.

as to looking at mediocre images (whatever the definition) – i think it CAN help but in terms of what NOT to do :)

You know, it was not a white wall! It almost ruined the image- it was overexposed sky in the background. I used Lightroom adjustment brush with green color, same shade as on railing, to point it in when it was not overexposed below recovery. Serendipity at work.

I think shooting grass, as the subject specifically, is the hardest damn thing EVER. Out of the hundreds of attempts I have made I think I have 1 that I find respectable.

I really like the warm light of your shot and the angle that it enters the frame. Nice dark background also really helps it pop.

I tend to agree with some of the points that you make in your post. Simply re-posting articles or Flickr photos is kind of the lazy man’s way and requires little to no effort on the part of the blog owner. I do however link to interesting things on other web pages from time to time as a way of sharing with my audience. My blog isn’t entirely about my opinion. Sometimes it’s about teaching, sometimes current events, and sometimes just pointing out new gear and accessories. As we discussed offline, I’d just like to offer a little more information on how camera calibration works. Rather than just setting a custom white balance, camera calibration is actually very similar to the calibration of a display or printer. The X-Rite ColorChecker Passport taps into to the Camera Calibration section of Lightroom and Photoshop’s Adobe Camera RAW module, and actually tells the software how to display the colors in the image by totally remapping them, just like a display or printer profile. No sliders are changed or anything like that, it works at a much lower level, so once you’ve created a profile for a certain lighting condition, and set it in the software, you can pretty much forget it. Of course, that’s still just a base for any other modifications you might make but right off the bat, the image looks great!

I finally caved in this holiday season and purchased a Nook Tablet. I like the feel and heft of a real book in my hands. However, the Nook allowed me the convenience of adjusting the back-lighting, font and point size. This makes reading physically more comfortable, and I can read more without too much eyestrain. However, your thoughts struck a chord with me. I have often thought of the impermanence of all things digital. If it were not for the relative permanence of stone, painted prehistoric cave walls, manuscripts, archival photos, etc., much of our world history, culture, art, music, and scientific discovery may not have been available to us.

I have already downloaded several photography eBooks, novels, and freebies from the local library. These books will likely live and eventually crash in my eReader. I regularly cull out physical books and reference materials that will not be re-read and deliver them to Goodwill, Panera, and Half-Price books. In the past month alone, two acquaintances have contacted me and said that they were the happy recipients of my donated books. My point is that digital materials are fragile. Will our digital musings, writings, artworks, and creative endeavors be available to inspire or awaken the curiosity of future generations?

Great thought, thanks for sharing, Karen. I haven’t even thought of THAT. Sometimes, you borrow a book to a friend. Or, as you said, give those unneeded away. With e-books, you cannot do that, you cannot legally transfer the content to somebody else. Another point for hard copies.
Although I do not share your concern abut preserving our creations- I believe in basis of Internet being dispersed, impossible to control or destroy resources. It will be there.

I can hardly believe you didn’t love this photo from the start. I’m a big fan of bug photos anyway, but what I really like about yours is your placement of the perfectly focused beetle small in the frame and filling the frame with the tulip; to me it suggests that the beetle-eye view is that the tulip is the almost the whole world.

Hi Iza, indeed a conundrum. I struggle with exactly same dilemmas. I, too, see content recycled over and over, but I tend to look at it as the indicator of the direction trends will tend to bend. Most of the time, I’m right on. The other side of the coin is the question whether we truly need to find the answer to the question, or rather, it’d be smart to just follow our own instincts (which I see you do) and just gauge the outcomes as they come.

Lovely, Iza. I had to check where the Coralville Lake was located. Quite a body of water! What time of the day was the HDR taken? I find the bokeh, right to the grasses so unusual. Do you always take five shots for your HDRs? I usually do seven… do you immediately see the pros and cons to either of the options?

Gosia, I typically take 5 exposures and use the two extreme and the middle, almost never I use all five. They are shot a step apart (Nikon), so I use -2, 0 and +2. I found it to be sufficient in most situations. But there are situations I need to shoot more. You can actually say by looking at the histogram. Your lightest, +2 should not have deep dark shadows in the areas you want detail (it dosen’t mean you have to have all the detail in every part of the photograph). But most importantly, your darkest, -2, should not have overexposed areas, unless it is the sun. If you have one of those problems, you might want to shoot 7 or even 9 exposures.

It is really no secret, Gosiu. It is combination of my husband’s knowledge of airplanes and our time with Google images to find the airplane, match it by engine number and wings shape… He loves to fly them, I love watching them. The rest is just photography- right shutter speed and right moment.

Laziness rather then approach. I was working in late afternoon in the back of the kitchen. With a tripod and a stationary subject, I did not care all that much about the shutter speed. BUt I did care about the depth of field, so I stepped the aperture down as much as I could with the lens.

It may just be a habit, but I like to think that the control I’m getting, not using the auto-bracketing, helps to expand that exposed range. It is actually a good idea, having some influence on what settings you use to take images for HDR. The main reason I do not do it is the fact I hardly ever use tripod, and with quick bursts my chances of getting frames easy to overlay increase. Let me know your thoughts when you try 5 frames.

You are so right. I myself am equally guilty. I need to get away from the flowers and bugs as there is a whole other world out there for our macro lenses to explore. I am in complete agreement about the flowers and bugs. I go to great length to try to avoid them on my blog all together unless they really jump out and force me to the shoot them. The internet is swamped with flower and bugs pictures… I try to capture something different.

I do! I feel like I totally get your point. I, too, find a lot of ‘street photography’ that’s so easily available these days everywhere you look (blogs, flickr, tumblr, Instagram, etc) overly busy and “accidental”. But, like with everything, there is always a flip side. There still is plenty of inspiring and aspiring quality work that gets my creative juices flowing. The ‘staged’ photography that we both prefer, seems easier to be accomplished. So many of its elements are controlled and executed. On the other hand, the impromptu nature of shooting what just appears in front of you, with all its light, subject, and composition imperfections, appears to me more demanding. What we see in loads out there might not be the top notch photography, but it also might not be the easiest one. Your ‘street-photographed’ sunflowers, Iza, are gorgeous, though, so you shouldn’t deny your ‘street photography’ talent after all. Hugs. Gosia

Dreamliner is not the largest one; this title belongs to A380 right now. But the Dreamliner is the most modern one (extensive composites presence in aircraft’s structure, many systems and concepts redesigned using the most recent technology available), and – if you can say something like that about any airliner – definitely the most “good looking” one.

I love this Lowepro Passport Sling, and yet it doesn’t look like any other boring camera bag that attracts attentention. It suits my needs perfectly for day trips. Protects my Fine Pix X100 nicely with plenty of room for my stuff like water bottle, 7″ Galaxy tab, wallet, spray jacket, a book, tickets etc etc. Oh yeh I even found a nifty place to store my Jobi GorillaPod Hybrid, and thats inside within the expandable section when its all zipped up, its out of the way leaving me more room in the main section….PERFECT.

Iza, you did a wonderful job on the black and white version of the gerber daisy. I too find it more work when converting an image to black and white but in the end I generally like the result. There are all kinds of reasons for choosing black and white over colour and for me, it mostly has to do with the feeling I am trying to convey in terms of story. Colour either has to BE the story or be an effective tool to tell the story. It must not get in the way of what I’m trying to say.

Lovely capture Iza. Light, warm tone and leaves vein-lines (that add to composition) makes it for me. Also make me stop and appreciate what might be last jump of the fall right here in my hometown. Gonna go and make some pictures today before it’s too late !!

As to blemishes – they don’t bother me so much as the tattered part of the top leaf – have no idea why though :) Think it might be related to some innate perfectionist element – still sometimes it’s a total pain in the ass – getting in the way of me enjoying otherwise beautiful photograph.

It’s hard to imagine but no real snow here in Poland yet – it’s brown and dirty everywhere i look so thank you for this image. I’m gonna look at it and wait patiently for the big white to finally fall and cover the landscape. Winter/snow is a great simplifier for the eye and for the camera so in that regard i’m lovin’ it too although sometimes it’s hard to overcome the winter idleness :)

I also agree that winter photographs straight from the camera have this almost monochromatic feel to them – no post-production needed if one can do it right.

just wanted to correct myself if my post came out that way (i’m a little chaotic when writing). I’m not saying all those traits and talents are given us at birth, no. That would be too beautiful. Some of them to some degree might, but we have to work hard to develop them to not go to waste. The rest we didn’t get, well, as you pointed out from David’s, we need to give them the proper environment to be born. So when you think about it, either way, we have to work really hard. It was exactly the case of Michelangelo. I always thought he just was that way – born genius – but he was the most prolific labourer and that got him his own space in our history.

While a lot of what I said is how I interpret your post, I do not agree with you that you do not list things given to us at birth. The talent to some extent, and certainly perseverance are not things you can work on. Can you imaging becoming now a painter? I canot, while I can, to some extent take decent photographs. I would also not be a sculptor, and no amount of school will help it. I just don’t have talent, it is not in my hands to make art, not even crafts.

Agreed, and that is exactly what i was saying, at least i thought i was in my post – clearly i’m not expressing myself enough :-)
We’re given some basic talents at the start, but the rest we have to work hard to discover and then develop them. Even those traits we suppose to have from the start – we have to work on them too, otherwise they are often wasted or at least not utlised to the fullest potential.

And no, i can’t imagine becoming a sculptor or painter right now, but the key to that question is “right now”.
I believe, provided that one could start from the scratch and devote big part of life – it is possible to some degree. Why not ?
Again, i’m not saying i imagine myself doing that – heck no ! but we tend to think about ourselves and our abilities in very short time spans.

Interestingly enough Michelangelo’s case is pretty similar to your raised issue. He was wholeheartedly a sculptor, so enamored with the marble he would not see a world outside of it. But he ended up painting a Sistine Chapel even though he would insist he’s not a painter and he could never be one (damn he didn’t even liked it at the time). He worked and sweat at it, he would sleep like 3 hours a day for several years and now we have this extraordinary thing in our world. He was also an architect of St Peter’s Basilica for almost 20 years.

I think he said at the end of his life that he owe it all to the draftsmanship, so in a way, if you think about it – he had a talent for drawing and on the rest he just kept on working. Granted he was a genius but what an example he’s made for the rest of us !

So let me ask yourself other way around : do you tell me that given you would have, let’s say 30 years or more ahead of passionate learning, having good good teachers and your hands on paint and brush day after day, you couldn’t become a painter ( to whatever level ) ?

Very cool Iza, i’m looking forward to see what you’ll come up with in a film realm. Regarding questions at the end ot the post – i was fortunate to start with film camera when attending university and being a part of CAPA (Cracow student photography agency) I loved it and to the last year i was regularly using my Yashica and Bessa R3a cameras simply because there is something about that process, the feeling i will never get working digital. Unfortunatelly when moved back to smaller city, the costs of hanging on to film paradigm were too high. Even availability of films or good enough labs are almost non existent. Even if i would like to learn to develop myself, the chemicals and the like are simply not available here either (although i don’t think i would like to mess up with dark room at this stage). I sold my cameras and film scanners recently, not without heartache though. Wish it was all simpler.

I get your pain when you said you couldn’t stop chimping or limit your frames – i’m here to say it’s possible even with LCD. I have now only one body and one lens and my last trip to Prague i have checked the LCD like maybe 5 times a day. It was a mind’s game at first i had to talk myself out of chimping behaviour (and was doing that at loud :-) but now i think i’m loving this simplicity to the bones. I still look at the back of my camera once in awhile if i’m afraid i could mess very important shot or when i’m in “fine art mode”. In my street and documentary type of workflow though that’s rather rare case and i’m always trying to evaluate pictures at the end of the day to emulate the shooting film feeling.

As to limiting the frames – i have nothing against fixed frames’ count but i think the right amount of frames is the one that gets you to the picture you envisioned. Having said that i rarely am coming back home from the daily shoot with more than 100 frames ( maybe more if i’m exploring new environment)

Anyway i hope you’ll enjoy film photography ride !

I also see your pain with analog technology slowly disappearing- less choices for film, less labs which develop. It is not easy in small town America just as it is not easy in small town Poland. Something I will be writing more in future post- I am already working on the one about scanning, but before I post, I want to actually find a place to scan my images larger than thumbnail ;).

Good question… I sometimes look back, and wonder if I had a better art teacher in primary school, and learned back then anything about drawing or painting, like rule of thirds maybe, measuring the proportions on a pencil before making first draft, anything about light- I could do better in those arts. I enjoyed it so much as child, but with no support, no knowledge, I was not seeing any improvement, and just gave up at one point.
Well, it is easy to blame on others, right?
Then, I was trying to go back to drawing about 10 years ago, and just felt overwhelmed with the base I did not have, and gave up, again. And then photography happened, offering “easy” fix, something I felt I could tackle. Maybe I just lacked persistence, patience is not me…
To answer your question, I feel I am missing a “knack” for those art or patience, both which are things we are born with, to be good at those, and no amount of learning would help.

Gotta say i really appreciate the effort of this series Iza. Exploring the Masters is something i enjoy very much now on your blog and makes me want to go and explore photographers even more. Hope you’ll have enough forces to go on with it. Thanks, Radek. I know I had a break before I finally had time to sit down and write this Minor White post, and I had few moments of doubt if it it is any useful. After all, you are right, adding few photographs or spreads would be helpful. I need to think about it. I always check if maybe Faded&Blurred did a Spotlight on photographer so I can link or if there are images on WikiCommons, but this is rare. And if you want to see one of Minor White abstracts, one which actually made me go and find more, look at this post from LensWork:

When I look a photograph, one of the first things I notice is whether or not the image draws me into it and speaks to me at some level as the viewer. The depth of field that the photographer uses to express their feelings towards the subject is part of the creative aspect of producing a compelling image. The depth of field may be shallow or deep, but when I look at the image, I am making a judgement about how that depth of field is appropriate to the image. I like both shallow and deep depths of field depending on the totality of the image.

My own personal preference is not to use flash at all, so obviously I must use a wide open aperture under certain lighting situations, the result being a shallow depth of field. I love my little f/1.4 lenses too. I taught high school photography classes, and my students probably thought it was my life’s greatest mission that they learn about the relationship between the aperture, shutter speed, depth of field, ISO, elements of photographic composition, and the resulting qualities of their photographs.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the opportunity to take photography classes, nor the time or inclination to pursue the group or self-learning and discovery to be able to analyze and appreciate the elements of a good photograph. Personally, I do not think the deciding factor of a good photo is clinical sharpness from stem to stern.

I adore the photographs of your kitties – fuzzy bits and all.

Thanks, Karen, I think you touched something in your comment I did not talk about in my post at all, two things, in fact. One is what photographer wanted to say, where he wanted to draw attention. Second, if image speaks, who cares how fuzzy it is. Which begs the question-did my friend plainly did not like the image or looked at it the wrong way, judging technique?

My wife and I love Canyonlands and Arches, I’ve been to Moab four times and I realize I can never discover all there is to see even if I spent the rest of my life traveling around the parks.
